Ethos

Based on experience, the Trust considers that it has been successful for two main reasons – a recognition that regeneration can only really work if the people who are most affected are given the opportunity themselves to steer the transformation of their community and that a community-led enterprise culture fosters -

  • Self-help
  • Reduces dependency
  • Is the basis for a confident, thriving and active community

The following is an outline of Equality Policy, and explains more about the ethos of the organisation :

We are committed to achieving equality in all aspects of our operation. STEP opposes and challenges all forms of unlawful or unfair discrimination against individuals or groups, believing everyone should be treated with equal respect.

STEP appreciates that, whilst much can be achieved by the development of legal measures, real progress can only be made by practical day-to-day commitment to provide equal opportunities at a grass roots level. The most effective way to achieve this is by taking action to foster a fully integrated community, at work and leisure, by positively welcoming all people and the practical application of this Equality Policy.

Inappropriate behaviour, against the spirit of this Policy, will be challenged and may lead to the disciplinary procedure being invoked.

STEP is committed to ensure that members of staff, volunteers, learners and users (including children cared for within Childcare) are selected, promoted and treated on the basis of relevant aptitudes, skills, abilities and task related criteria.

At Early Steps Nursery we aim to create a positive environment in which everyone can feel safe, confident and happy.

The Chair of Trustees is responsible for ensuring this Policy is consistently applied and maintained through the delegated authority of the Chief Executive, who in-turn, ensures staff and volunteers are provided with training and guidance to help develop an understanding of the discrimination faced by individuals or groups.

Staff and volunteers are made aware of this Policy through the induction process and must accept personal responsibility for its practical application.

Any member of staff or volunteer who feels that STEP has applied inequitable treatment within the scope of this Policy may voice the matter through the grievance procedure. Learners and other users will have equality issues resolved through the feedback procedure.

The practical application of this Policy will be kept under review, as STEP’s commitment to the principle of equality is a major feature of its ethos."
